In 2019, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) of Pakistan introduced a new system called the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) to regulate the usage of mobile devices in the country. The DIRBS system was designed to identify and register non-compliant devices with PTA mobile tax operating on local mobile networks and eventually block them to ensure that only compliant devices are used. With the implementation of this system, the FBR aimed to bring transparency and accountability to the mobile device market in Pakistan.

PTA Tax Calculator
The government has decided on a specific amount of Mobile phone value in USD. The amount of tax owed is based on several factors, including the phone’s value and whether or not it has been registered with the PTA.
The exact calculation of the PTA tax on a mobile phone in Pakistan is determined by the following formula for mobile phones with a value in USD above 200:
- Tax = (Device Price * Tax Rate) + (Customs Duty * (1 + Sales Tax Rate))
Where the device price is the phone’s value, Tax Rate is the rate of tax specified by the PTA, which can range from 0% to 100% depending on the device and its age. Customs Duty is a set amount levied on all imported devices. The sales Tax Rate is the standard sales tax rate in Pakistan, currently 17%.
